Yes, you can. But firstly backup all of your important data. Then you may follow the instructions below.
(I suppose you have vista already installed in your laptop. -- in most case)

For an easy way to make this, maybe you'd like a new tool named Wubi. You can install latest Ubuntu Linux under Windows Vista / XP without creating a new parition with Wubi. It is like a Ubuntu installer for Windows users.

With the latest release of the popular Linux-based operating system, Ubuntu Hardy Heron, the installation process just got easier for Windows users who wish to try out an alternative to Vista or XP.  Even .NET developers who are looking out on trying the Mono project (the .NET platform for Linux-based operating systems) can benefit from it.  All this is possible thanks to a little Windows utility called Wubi, which is an installer for Ubuntu.

As described by Wikipedia’s definition on the tool:

Wubi adds an entry to the Windows boot menu which allows you to run Linux. Ubuntu is installed within a file in the Windows file system (c:\wubi\disks\system.virtual.disk), as opposed to being installed within its own partition. This file is seen by Linux as a real hard disk.

According to Wubi’s official site, Wubi is an officially supported Ubuntu installer for Windows users that can bring you to the Linux world with a single click.  Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way.

If you have Linux installation CD/DVD (say burn the iso file with your CD-RW or DVD-RW), then you may follow the simple step by step process listed below to install linux on your computer with preinstalled windows vista.

1. Boot in Vista and go to - right-click
My Computer>>Manage>>Disk Management
or
My Computer>>Manage>>Server Manager->Storge->Disk Management

2. Right-click on the main Vista partition and select Shrink Volume.

3. Enter the shrink size and it will reduce the volume of the primary partition, leaving the rest of the disk free as unpartitioned space.

4. Now Boot Up with Linux setup cd or dvd and simply install linux on the new unallocated partition.

5. That it. As you will see entry of vista in the default bootloader of linux by slecting that you will be able to boot vista with no problems.

Hi,
If you never used linux, I think it is really important to choose a easy-to-use release.
I have used Redhat, Debian, Suse and Ubuntu. And I think Ubuntu is most easy to use,
if you want to install some software, just run apt-get install xxx and it will automatic download
it and the depandence, the community is also prosperous and many warm-hearted people will help
you with the using problem.

Just try it.
